Intimate L'Incontro

I recently dined at L'Incontro in celebration of L's birthday (one of many celebrations!). The last time I was here was for an unlimited wine with assorted small plates of food promotion it was having. The time before that was for a well-attended Zonin wine dinner.

I realized that I hadn't ordered off the menu at L'Incontro in some time!

Tina Pamintuan, along with her partner Brady Wheeler, now manage L'Incontro and they have infused a brighter, more youthful vibe intro the restaurant. First of all the interiors are more homey yet bright; the former L'Incontro was quite dark. Next, they like to have events such as wine tasting or wine dinners. With its location on N Garcia and outside of a mall, it is more of a destination restaurant in the city. It's the perfect place to go for an intimate party or a special date.

I came quite early because I was starved and dinner was supposed to start at 9pm. Thank goodness J was there already so we got to catch up on each other while I scarfed down the homemade focaccia with the pesto and tomato sauces. T came in and so we ordered some appetizers while waiting for everyone else. I was torn between ordering the ham and cheese crepe or the beef carpaccio. T told me to go for the crepe.

OMG. I was so good it was if I died and went to pasta heaven. Each bite, each creamy truffle cream morsel, was divine. Mushroom, Parma ham and miles and miles of melty cheese - where had this crepe been all my life?

T ordered the Wagyu carpaccio and kindly let me try. I wanted one for myself! "Restraint, restraint," I thought inwardly. Just look at that marbling!

J started with an octopus risotto without rice. Sound strange? This is what it looks like.

J said it was delicious. It was my first time to see risotto without rice! T said they can customize your order.

Remember my restraint? It ended up as a main course of this

Three lovely lamb chops on tomato rissoni. I ate all the chops and a little bit of the rissoni.
As the conversation around the table was about the Cohen diet and eating in moderation, this is how the rest of the table ate:

R got grilled prawns with grilled veg. T got the carpaccio followed by the same main as R. S ordered the crepe to start and split a sea bass with L. M got the lobster bisque (this is what I'm ordering next time I come here!) halfed a risotto with L. L ate half the risotto and half the sea bass. This prompted R to say, "Is that CARBS??" and L said, "But it's my birthday!" Classic!

We all ordered Malongotinis and L shared her dessert with the others.

Net net, I ate the most at the table with my full crepe and my 3 lamb chops.
I love carbs and will never give them up. I will give up dessert for lamb chops though!

What would you give up?

Photo ops at Paparazzi

There's a new chef in town, and guess what, he's only 25 years old!

Edsa Shangri-La invited me to try the new menu of Chef Robert Cimmino, the chef de cuisine at their primo Italian resto, Paparazzi. He was born in Marino near Rome and used to help his grandmother prepare the traditional Sunday lunch for their family. Ceg Rob studied at Michelangelo Buonarroti in Fiuggi for 5 years and comes from a 6-year stint in China. Like me, likes to take photos of his own food too!

They had sent me a mask with the invite and requested me to bring it. Of course, silly me didn't read the fine print and I was supposed to decorate it. Oops!

Luckily, the intelligent people at Edsa Shang provided extra masks, assorted sequins, feathers and other fun things for decorating with as I was not the only one who forgot my assignment. I chose a unfussy black swan theme for my mask.

Chef Rob in action
Chef Rob did a cooking demo for us to see how easily he prepared his dishes. He prepared a 5-course degustation menu, which I really prefer as you get to try all the dishes without feeling too full afterwards. Plus, they paired some very nice wines with them as well :)

Gorgeous table centerpieces made in Italy (front)

(back) Which view do you prefer?

Freshly baked bread

First course: Aragosta
The first course of lobster carpaccio, vanilla infused oil, classic lobster tomato emulsion, roots and leaves, gelato of balsamico and dried raspberries, tomato mango and cilantro salad was a light and delicious starter to the meal. I love those microgreens! They paired this with Bella Mia Bianco Cataratto & Chardonnay 2009, a crisp, fruity white.

Second course: Paccheri
The second course was paccheri with scallops, porcini and arugula ragout served with seaweed consomme was paired with Solepapa Frascati Malvasia Bianco & Trebbiano Tuscano 2009. The assortment flavors were good but I prefer a less thick sort of pasta.

Third course: Wagyu
The Wagyu course was braised Wagyu short ribs served with morel and black truffle., served with Chianti Docg Sangiovese 2009. The beef was extremely tender and tasty though I would've liked to have more morels! And truffle for that matter.

Fourth course: Merluzzo
The next dish was of cod fillet, roasted and poached in seafood consomme and seafood stew. This was served with Orvietto Classico Grechetto and Procanico 2009. My seatmate had a very interesting story about Merluzzo; now it will forever have a different meaning for me!

Dessert: Cioccolato
"Chocolate can't quit" is what it said in this menu and it was (from left to right) a chocolate Grand Cru cigar filled with marscapone orange chocolate mousse, gelato of Gianduja truffled truffle and the best ever, a small bombolone.

Now, I must tell you, that bombolone was the BOMB! It was like a little doughnut filled with rich chocolate. Simply amazing, I ate another one but left the rest of the chocolate. That evens out calorie-wise, doesn't it?

Extra extra
We were treated to a husband and wife team, baritone and sporano, respectively who belted out tunes such as Nessun Dorma and hits from Phantom of the Opera. It was a very enjoyable evening with great food and even better company.

You too can come and try Chef Rob's menu of sophisticated dishes showcasing quality ingredients for lunch Monday to Friday and for dinner daily.

Many thanks to Leslie and GM Henry Lee!

P.S. I did not win an overnight stay for 2 at Edsa Shang for my Black Swan mask but the lady who did win had her mask decorated in pink glitter by her daughter! Kids have an eye for decorating like no one eye...

Ti Amo, Va Bene

I've always been a firm believer in food first, interiors second. A restaurant with crappy food but beautiful interiors will always be a beautiful, crappy restaurant. The only places that negate this are located in chic European cities that serve crap tourist food- you're not paying for the food, you're making memories.

When I heard that the ex-chef of Mi Piace had a little place of his own located at the mini-mall at the Petron station outside of Dasmarinas Village, I immediately wanted to eat there.

I didn't have to read other food blogs or reviews talking about the food or describing it as a "gasoline station cafe." (which does nothing for its image, by the way). When I mentioned to my sister that I was going to eat here, what mattered to me was when she said, "Do you have reservations? I heard it gets really packed."

So on that night last week when the rain was coming down horizontally, we made our way to the little restaurant that could, Va Bene Pasta Deli.

The tiny kitchen where the freshest pastas come from

By the time we got there, the place with packed. With about 30 people.

Our table with bench-style seating was propped next to the table display of canned goods, wine, sauces and other Italian food things for sale and in front of a freezer. In fact, when the group asked for the wine list, I just reached behind me, pulled out two different bottles and asked, "Red or white?"

We were a United Nations dinner, eating at an Italian restaurant. In order: French, American, Filipino, Danish, Indian, Portuguese/Argentinean, Brazilian. That's what you call international relations!

I was excited to see the menu. I thought I had known what I had wanted to order, but they change their menu selection every so often and what I saw on the web was no longer available. Don't you hate that?

They placed some crusty bread with yummy tomato dip for us to nibble on while waiting for out food. Like the movie, it was Gone in 60 Seconds.

There were only a few choices for starters, but the majority of us wanted the foie gras. Others ordered the polipo, or octopus salad. Unfortunately, like how it is in many small dining establishments (think Som's with half its menu crossed out) the foie gras was out of stock. Wishful thinking on my part! A small restaurant in a gasoline station; foie gras! Pffft.

The salami and cheese platter came out first, good for two persons.
Demolished.

My new order was the chicken Milanese with caramelized apple and arugula. What a tease! Don't the apples look like they are pretending to be foie gras?

I must admit that, though I find breaded chicken breast more suitable for 6 year old children, the breading was light and crispy, not at all oily, and the breast quite tender. The perfect bite of caramelized apple, arugula and breaded chicken breast was quite tasty. Too bad the dish ran out of chicken.

The polipo salad looked tasty. I love how they sliced the octopus so you get a nice cross section of the tentacle. Its meat was tender, and not at all rubbery how some tend to get, but it lacked an oomph of flavor.

We all ordered pasta for our main dish because, well, good fresh pasta is hard to come by. They also had lamp chops and some other dishes on their menu.

I ordered the fresh crab tortellini. It was one of the last dishes to come out of the kitchen but it was
ah-mazing!

For me, the perfect accompaniment to the dish would be a couple of lamp chops (I was really hungry that day! Expectations running high!).

My second choice was the truffle cream and Portobello spaghetti.

This was so flavorful and light. Sometimes you order a cream-based sauce in an Italian resto and you can't even finish the thing. What would make this dish even more perfect would freshly shaved truffles. No? But then again, if they were serving truffles, might as well ask for free gas while you're eating. One can dream!

Another dish I do enjoy is gnocchi, but only if its done right. Otherwise it could come off too starchy or gummy, which nobody likes. The gnocchi here was light and flavorful as well. Made me remember that scene in Godfather 3 when Andy Garcia was teaching Sofia Coppola the proper way to make gnocchi.
H-O-T! This dish? Not so much. Could've used some more meat that the one measly prawn.

This tomato-based tortellini looks absolutely delish! Heyyyy, do I detect one more piece that what I got? Not fair!

For me, this last pasta dish looks like it could've used a little bit of color in it. White on white looks like a polar bear in a snow storm.

To top off my (bitin) meal, I ordered the profiteroles for dessert. I love how they forgot to say on the menu that it was going to be topped off with walnuts, which I am allergic to! Sigh.

Despite the challenge, I was able to eat these babies sans walnuts, and it was very tasty, for a small restaurant. The chocolate custard filling could have been a bit creamier, but the choux pastry was fluffy.

We all agreed that the servings here didn't fill you up. At about P1,500 per person with wine, do you think it is cheap or expensive for a hole in the wall type restaurant with good food?

As for the service, you constantly had to call the waiter to follow up on extra bread, to see if the wine was chilled, etc etc. Seems like there are two servers for the entire restaurant. Plus they charge you if you ask for another of those tomato dip/ bread thingies. They have to make money, don't they!

All in all, I would come back here again. And you should too! Don't forget to make reservations :)
